Details about the position:

  • Registered nurse who has medical surgical experience who can work well independently completing and educating patients
  • Experience in surgical services preferre
  • Monday - Thursdays 1000 - 1830; Friday 0.
  • Completes preoperative phone calls to patients who have procedures scheduled at the Main OR. East Side Surgery Center; West Side Surgery Center; Kaukauna Surgery Center; GI Lab; Cath lab and Pain.

Major
Responsibilities:

  • Conducts patient assessments by obtaining medical history and test results via telephonic interaction or in person meeting. Evaluates patient situations and coordinates care amongst various facilities (nursing home, assisted living, group home, dialysis center, etc.) and patient, family, and physician offices. Recommends additional follow-up prior to procedures if needed.
  • Assists patient with arranging transportation, interpreter, Social Services requests/needs, etc. Assists with pacemaker/implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) notification; assists with hotel arrangements or family waiting sleep rooms as needed.
  • Provides Durable Power of Attorney (DPOA) information upon request. Explains DPOA rights and makes this information available to patient; retrieves copy of DPOA if not on file.
  • Enters health information provided by patient in electronic medical record system and ensures data reflected is accurate and current.
  • Obtains, places and transcribes patient orders electronically for pre-procedure testing, as well as day of service orders. Clarifies and arranges testing to be completed for patient as required; coordinates with physician offices, clinics, etc. Monitors and reviews results of pre-procedure testing, including notifying physicians of abnormal test results.
  • Retrieves and reviews testing results conducted at both Aurora and non-Aurora facilities. Notifies physician of medications ordered that conflict with allergies or other prescription medication patient is taking. Reviews and coordinates future activities based on test results. Requests additional testing/referrals from physicians based on patient history.
  • Attests patient is fully prepared for upcoming procedure and educates patient regarding time of check in, duration of procedure, and answers their questions. Instructs patient regarding diet/fluid intake and medications to continue/stop taking prior to procedure. Provides clear, explicit instructions for patient and family to follow to ensure a successful procedure, and are instrumental in preparing both the patient and health record for the day of procedure.
  • May perform selected lab and diagnostic tests.
  • Ensures all regulatory requirements (history & physical, informed consent, correct procedure/site) are completed and current.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the team member practices, and
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.

Education Required:

  • Associate's Degree in Nursing.

Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 3 years of experience in medical/surgical/perioperative nursing in a hospital setting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Familiarity with a procedural area that involves pre and post operative care, i.e. operating room (OR), day surgery, post anesthesia care unit (PACU), medical surgery, etc.
  • Knowledge of patient assessment gathered through obtaining history, test results and telephonic interaction.
  • Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a Windows operating system, use of electronic mail and electronic medical record systems.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively make critical, independent decisions.
  • Ability to evaluate the patient situation, coordinate required care and assist with arrangements as needed.
  • Ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with a variety of patients, staff and physicians.
  • Ability to interact with patients with variable cultural and educational backgrounds and communication barriers.
  • Demonstrated organization, prioritization and problem solving skills.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Exposed to a normal office environment.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to:
  • - lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
  • Must be able to:
  • - push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
  • Position requires use of foot pedals on carts or machines.
  • Functional speech and hearing to allow for effective communication of instructions and conversation via telephone and in person.
  • Manual dexterity required for operation of computer.
  • Visual acuity required to facilitate review of written documents/computer screens, medical records, and to record information accurately.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
